Evaluating Strategies|評估策略

Metacognition Evaluating Strategy

Metacognition evaluating is the evaluation to cognitive activities, which aims to achieve cognitive mission effectively. (Pang & Lee, 2008) To be more detailed, evaluating means the assessment on learners’ recent knowledge status, encompassing tracking of their attention as they study, and self-testing and enquiring, and this occurs continuously (before, within and after a task). (Lawanto, 2010) Choi (2006) indicates that “the purpose of metacognition evaluation is to encourage students to think about such problems (e.g. poor performance) by reflecting upon themselves through self-evaluation. (p.277)” According to Hargrove (2007), the operation of evaluation includes the fellow elements:

  1. Evaluating goal achievement

  2. Judging accuracy and adequately of the results

  3. Evaluating appropriateness of procedures used

  4. Assessing handling of obstacles/errors

  5. Judging efficiency of the plan and its execution (p. 63)

  • Creative Evaluation

Creative evaluation refers to the action that engages metacognition, and metacognition can assist improve the creative evaluation. This strategy can contribute to optimal creative results as metacognitive mode brain are co-activated and exhibited connectivity during creative processes and evaluation. (Preiss, Cosmelli, Grau & Ortiz, 2015) According to Creative & Credible (2015), creativity can be demonstrated by evaluator every time as they view an evaluation problem from a novel angel, or tailor evaluation method according to particular context. In addition, Creative & Credible (2015) indicates an evaluation cycle to show the evaluation process in Figure 1. This can be a reference to the evaluation strategy in design study or projects.

  • Reflection – Reflective Design Journal

Reflection refers to the thinking about or considering something, consciously and somewhat carefully. (Silva-Filho & Tateo, 2019) This is useful for students on evaluating their study and designs also. There is a more specific reflection strategy in design study which is the reflective design journal. By using reflective design journal, design students concern more about their learning while they think more about their class and design that can enhance their metacognition. In addition, this journal can increase their design understandings and abilities on the design analytical approach by reconsidering all crucial stages in the design process. (Kurt & Kurt, 2017) In Kurt and Kurt’s study (2017), reflective design journal actually involves “awareness of learning”, “organizing and planning learning”, “monitoring learning” and “evaluating learning”. However, in this session, the discussion will be focused on “evaluating learning”. Figure 2 shows the data that analyzed by Kurt and Kurt on the study of evaluation part of students’ reflective design journal. From this, we can understand the detail of the journal content. This may also be the reference elements for fashion design students on doing their own reflective journal.
